Hand Building 2 - Teapots @ our Marpole Studio
Join us for 5 sessions over 5 weeks and learn to Hand Build a Teapot!
This intermediate-level hand building course explores both functional and sculptural approaches to ceramic teapot making. Over five sessions, students will design and construct a fully functional teapot while also being encouraged to push beyond conventional forms and consider the teapot as a sculptural object.
Building a teapot is one of the most technically challenging projects in ceramics. It requires careful attention to proportion, structure, and the relationship between multiple components, including the body, spout, lid, and handle. For many students, this process involves repetition, adjustment, and practice. The course emphasizes patience, problem-solving, and skill development rather than quick results.
Students will work with a combination of pinch pot, coil-building and slab-building techniques, integrating different hand building methods to support both functional requirements and sculptural expression. Demonstrations and feedback will focus on spout geometry and pouring behavior, lid fitting, handle ergonomics, and strategies for assembling complex forms. Both traditional and experimental teapot forms are welcome.
This course is designed for students with prior hand building experience who are comfortable working independently and are prepared to engage in sustained practice. By the end of the course, participants will gain a deeper understanding of teapot construction and build confidence in approaching complex ceramic forms.
